GCSE results 2024

South Dartmoor Community College students are celebrating impressive GCSE results today.  Once again, the students have been successful in their academic performance with the vast majority meeting, or outperforming, their targets, placing them in a strong position nationally.

Students did particularly well in academic subjects such as English, Maths and Science with many top grades achieved, for example, one in five grades was a top grade (7+) in English.  Furthermore, in English Language, for example, over three quarters of all students met their externally set targets with 50% surpassing them.  Students achieving a grade 5+ (a strong pass) in both English and Maths is in line with the top 20% of schools nationally.  Students also achieved well in the practical and creative subjects, for example, in Dance where 92.3% of students gained a Level 2 pass (GCSE equivalent), in PE where 85.7% of students gained a pass and in Childcare where 90% gained a Level 2 pass.  Overall, there was a stunning pass rate of 99.4%.

Jen Veal, Executive Headteacher, said: “When I started at South Dartmoor, just as the first lockdown ended, these students were in Year 8 and I was linked to them.  We saw each other seven times a day in between lessons and break times.  As a result, I got to know them really well as individuals and I became really fond of them.  They are a great group of young people who engaged really well with us to get the most out of their education.  These excellent results reflect that and they can be truly proud of what they achieved.

These superb results are a testament to how well our teachers know both the curriculum and our students.  The excellent relationships combined with outstanding subject knowledge has resulted in a set of outcomes with which the college is delighted.  Students have shown exceptional resilience and dedication, and we have really enjoyed working with them.  Results are important, of course, but our students are so much more than a set of grades.  They are wonderful young people, mature, responsible, kind, intellectually curious and I am proud of them as a year group and as individuals”.

Kerri McCarthy, Interim Director of Sixth Form, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming back the majority of the year group to study with us in the Sixth Form.  We are also looking forward to welcoming a number of external students from across South Devon in September and to supporting them all with their post 16 education.  We wish our students every success for the future and we look forward to watching them flourish through the next stage of their educational journey, whatever that may be.

On behalf of the staff, we congratulate all our students and wish them much happiness and success for the future.”
